Primary & Secondary Design
RPG Electrical Power System Engineering, have extensive experience in developing secondary designs for protection control interlocking and SCADA for substations. We have designed both customer and utility substations from 10kV substations to 220kV and 400kV substations.”
Our engineers are approved to design for ESB the utility in Ireland and have carried out many utility substation designs both for customers connecting to the grid and for the utility directly both in new greenfield station designs and upgrading of existing stations.
Employing the latest software drafting tools with object-oriented methodologies and inhouse quality and lean manufacturing systems we have developed a system of models and templates which ensures that a full suite of high quality secondary design from schematics, relay specification cable lists termination schedules BOMs and terminal drawings can be produced quickly.
What We Do
Cable Ampacity
We use industry leading CYMCAP power cable ampacity software to provide cable ampacity calculations in line with IEC 60287. These range from low voltage industrial applications up to transmission scale substation interconnection projects. We analyse standard installations, utility crossings, multiple duct banks, installations in ground air and water, in addition to horizontal directional drilling assessments. Cable rating determines the safe, maximum continuous current a conductor can carry without overheating.
Earthing
We use industry leading SES earthing software CDEGS to model earthing systems in order to verify compliance with IEEE80, EN 50522 & National Specifications as appropriate.
Single Line Diagram
High level symbolic representation of the electrical power system network. This drawing acts as the baseline reference for any electrical project. It illustrates how the system is connected and enables identification of system elements, efficient system analysis, safe switching, and project planning.
Design Risk Assessment
Hazard identification studies executed before construction, operation, or maintenance begins. The analysis evaluates the severity and likelihood of risks to ensure absolute compliance with industry safety regulations. The process implements smart control measures early in the project lifecycle to protect personnel and minimize liability.
Substation Layout
Efficient layout of high voltage and ancillary equipment within the substation in line with standards and utility requirements. Designed to ensure safety clearances are maintained between live parts, equipment, and surrounding structures, vehicle access, routine maintenance, and future expansion.
3D Model Design & Integration
Use of 3D modelling and integration with other disciplines to identify clashes, issues, and solutions at the design stage.
Designated Work Area Design
Safe, physically defined boundaries for personnel executing hazardous on-site maintenance tasks. Assessing DWA requirements to reduce the requirement of outages to perform regular maintenance.
Civil Design Interface
Coordinating of design with civil and structural elements to allow seamless flow of information between stakeholders and avoid costly delays.
Equipment Ducting Design Coordination
Coordination of ducting electrical requirements with civil requirements.
Building Services
Design and layout of lighting, heating, and small power within an installation.
Building Electrical Containment
Containment trays, ladders, and conduits inside buildings.
Building Heating Calculations
Thermal assessments required to maintain ideal operating climates for facilities. The study evaluates structural heat loss against the internal heat generated by active electrical equipment.
Lighting Illumination Calculations
Comprehensive lighting design ensures lux levels comply fully with statutory safety standards for both normal and emergency operations in critical control rooms and high-voltage yards.
Fire & Intruder Alarm Design
Layout of integrated security networks featuring smoke detectors, heat sensors, alarms, and sounders.
AC Loading Calculations
AC power studies for all auxiliary equipment operating within the facility. The analysis sizes backup diesel generators, auxiliary transformers, and distribution boards.
DC Loading Calculations
Critical continuous and momentary power calculations required by station battery backup systems. The sizing optimizes battery banks and charging systems to sustain vital operations during unexpected power outages. The analysis ensures protection relays, control circuits, and emergency lighting remain online for a designated period on loss of mains supply.
Site & Substation Earthing Design
Substation grids engineered to safely dissipate high fault currents into the earth. The grid limits dangerous step and touch voltages to protect station operators from fatal electrical shocks.
Equipment Earthing Details
Physical bonding connections specified from equipment, support structures, and ancillary metallic objects directly to the main ground grid.
Cable Phasing and Bonding Diagram
Connection schematics mapping the exact physical order of three-phase high-voltage power cables. The drawing details how cable shields, sheaths, and armour are grounded to manage high currents safely. The diagram eliminates circulating currents and prevents dangerous induced sheath voltages along the cable run.
Equipment Short Circuit & Environmental Loadings
Structural checks calculating the mechanical forces exerted on equipment during major electrical faults. The engineering factors in harsh environmental stresses like wind, ice, and extreme temperature shifts. The analysis ensures structural supports withstand extreme physical stress without buckling or failing.
Lightning Protection Design & Risk Assessments
Regional atmospheric shielding systems designed based on localized lightning strike frequencies. The plan strategically positions shield wires, masts, and surge arresters to intercept lightning strikes safely. The network routes high-energy lightning currents directly into the earth without damaging sensitive equipment.
IPP / Customer Substation Schematics
Comprehensive wiring diagrams, logic paths, and functional layouts for Independent Power Providers / Customer owned substations.
Utility Substation Schematics
Comprehensive wiring diagrams, logic paths, and functional layouts for utility-owned transmission / distribution stations.
Control Cabinet Design & Specification
Optimal internal component layouts configured for terminal blocks, protection relays, and mounting rails. The document defines physical cabinet dimensions, environmental ingress protection (IP) ratings, and thermal cooling needs. The specification delivers the precise schematics needed for factory manufacturing and seamless field installation.
Cable Lists
Tabular tracking databases compiling every single cable running across the project footprint. The log tracks unique identification tags, origins, destinations, exact cable types, and physical lengths. The document serves as a master reference sheet to streamline procurement, site routing, and construction teams.
Termination Lists
Connection directories charting exactly where every individual wire core connects within system panels. The index lists specific terminal block numbers, strip identifications, and wire ferrule codes with precision. The guide directs electrical installers accurately during the final wiring, loop testing, and commissioning phases.
Bill of Materials
Comprehensive procurement schedules listing every piece of equipment, component, and hardware item required. The inventory specifies exact manufacturer part numbers, technical descriptions, and total quantities needed for construction. The document forms the primary baseline for accurate project cost estimation, transparent bidding, and purchasing.
CT Suitability Calculations
Performance verifications ensuring Current Transformers function reliably without saturating during electrical faults. The study analyses accuracy classes, knee-point voltages, and the connected secondary burden loops. The engineering ensures protective relays receive precise data to isolate and clear electrical faults safely.
Signal Lists
Digital alarms, analogue measurements, status indicators, and remote supervisory commands. The list configures SCADA system databases to enable seamless, real-time facility monitoring.
Thermal Rating
Rating of Bare Conductors establishing the maximum continuous operating temperature limits based on ambient environmental temperatures against the internal heat generated during peak operations.
